  • National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur
  • An Institution of National importance under MHRD, Government of India

Infrastructute

The present infrastructure of the Institute is 57 years old and the capacity expansion was increased by 54% in different phases (2009-13) due to implementation of new reservation policy in higher educational Institutions, now the situation has become very serious with respect to infrastructure and basic amenities.

On the recommendation of the oversight committee, grant was sanctioned to Institute for the development of the Infrastructure to implement the reservation policy of Government of India in NIT Jamshedpur. Though the MHRD has been releasing grant for the development of infrastructure and maintenance work in the Institute but developmental (infrastructure and basic amenities) activities could not start due to several reasons during last so many years.

In 2004, the students intake strength of UG and PG was 285 and 60 respectively. Now, the student intake strength of UG and PG has been increased to 601 and 266, respectively. Further, total research scholars are increased from 5 to 125.

At present, sanctioned strength of students is around 3400, the available accommodation is 1695 but able to accommodate only 2225 nos. of students and the remaining students are staying outside campus.

After implementation of reservation policy, the existing strength of the students are around 3400, faculty (sanctioned post 246), and supporting staff-271(sanctioned). But, the present infrastructure: Hostels, Classrooms, examination halls, laboratories & equipment, library & learning resources, computational facilities, workshop facilities, buildings, faculty chambers, research & ICT infrastructure, sports facilities, facilities for student activities, faculty & staff quarters and basic amenities (Water, electricity, roads, sewage disposal, internet facility, and ecology balance) are not adequate to fulfil the requirements of increased capacity expansion.

Moreover, the existing infrastructure is also in a dilapidated condition due to zero maintenance in last so many years.

In order to fulfil the requirements and to cater the basic needs of the students, staff and faculty; the new infrastructural development, extensive renovation and maintenance of the existing buildings / infrastructure in the campus have become inevitable.
